Color

These settings affect color in conjunction with the palette, color curves and individual xform color values. There is no set combination to make a perfect image. Once you’ve settled on a design you like, play with different color combinations to give your final image the desired look.

Note that unlike most other fields in the program, the first five fields in this table do not reset the entire rendering process when changed. This makes it very convenient to experiment with these values because the result will be seen almost instantaneously. The responsiveness is even more pronounced when using the GPU.

Changing these will instead reset the process to either the density filtering stage, or the final accumulation stage. See info on each field to find out which stage is used as the reset point.

Brightness

The brightness of the final output image.

Range: 0.05 – 1000.00

Default: 4.00

Render State: Density filtering.

Gamma

The gamma of the final output image. Higher values will give better color, but will reveal more scattered points. Lower values will reduce scattered points but will wash the colors out to white.

Range: 1 – 9999.00

Default: 4.00

Render State: If early clip, density filtering, else final accumulation.

Gamma threshold

The gamma threshold of the final output image. Higher values will reduce scattered points, but will also reduce color quality. Lower values will reveal more scattered points, but give better color. This field shows 4 decimal places because it is extremely sensitive in some cases.

Range: 0 – 10.0000

Default: 0.10

Render State: If early clip, density filtering, else final accumulation.

Vibrancy

The scale factor to apply to the alpha channel log scaling when gamma correcting the final output image. Higher values will give more saturated colors. Lower values will wash the colors out to white.

Range: 0 – 1.00

Default: 1.00

Render State: If early clip, density filtering, else final accumulation.

Highlight power

Used to mitigate over saturated areas that are too white. A value of -1 disables this, all other values control how quickly each pixel saturates to white.

Range: -1 – 10.00

Default: 1.00

Render State: If early clip, density filtering, else final accumulation.

K2

Alternative brightness control that is used in conjunction with the brightness value above. A value of 0 disables this, all other values control the brightness.

Range: 0 – 10.00

Default: 0.0

Render State: If early clip, density filtering, else final accumulation.

Background

The background color of the image. Click the ... button to display a color chooser dialog. The selected color will become the background color of the cell. This value is ignored during final accumulation if transparency is used.

Default: Black (0, 0, 0)

Palette mode

The mode used for palette indexing when accumulating to the histogram. Changing this rarely makes any noticeable difference in the final image.

Step

If the specified palette index is a fraction, round down to the nearest integer.

Linear

Blend the specified index with the one after it.

Default: Linear, which is slightly slower than step, but gives more correct color.
